Is The New Munchin' Shield Worth It?

Munchkin "Flow Shield" Marketing to Vulnerable Moms 😒

So you may have seen some ads circulating about this "innovative product" from Munchkin, which claims to be designed to "boost your breastfeeding confidence." 😅 I’ve got some thoughts on the latest “game-changing” product from Munchkin—the “Flow Shield.” Spoiler alert: it’s not the miracle product they’re making it out to be, and I’m here to break it down for you! 💥

So, here’s the deal: Munchkin is out here telling moms that 93% of breastfeeding moms rely on the Flow Shield. Sounds impressive, right? Well, here’s the catch: that statistic is based on a study Munchkin funded, which, shocker, is not publicly available. So yeah, we’re just supposed to trust their numbers with literally no more information than these claims they plastered up on their website? How reassuring. 😬 The big question here is: 93% of what moms? The ones who used the tool that Munchkin handed them? Color me skeptical. 🤨

Now, the whole idea behind this thing is to “boost your confidence” by showing you milk in the shield channel. 🍼 But let’s be real: just because you see milk doesn’t mean the baby is actually getting it. You might be looking at milk in the channel, but how much of that milk is actually making it into your baby’s tummy? Spoiler: we don’t know. 🙄

Here’s the thing though—if you want to know if your baby is getting enough milk, look at the real markers of milk intake: diapers, weight gain, and a baby who’s growing and thriving. 📈💩👶 That’s the real proof in the pudding, folks. Are they soaking through a reasonable number of wet diapers and having plenty of poops? 💦 Are they gaining weight steadily? 📊 Is your baby showing signs of satisfaction after feeds? 👌 Are you hearing those sweet swallows at the breast? 👂

That’s your real checklist. Let’s keep it real—this whole shield isn’t solving the problem; it’s just putting a shiny bandaid on it. 💅

And let’s not forget about the cleaning routine. The suggested cleaning process is several steps and, let’s be honest, most of us will “forget” to do it at 3 a.m. after a sleepless night. 🌙 Plus, we’ve got these tiny little channels where bacteria could happily set up camp 🦠, and that’s just a recipe for mold or other yucky stuff. 🤢

Now, I’m all for nipple shields when indicated (I used them myself), but let’s be clear: they’re not the same as breastfeeding directly from the breast. Babies can kind of cheat the system with a shallow latch when using a shield. 😩 So while you might think this is going to solve your problems, it could actually be creating new ones. A nipple shield isn’t fixing the root cause—it’s just masking the issue. And it’s doing it in a way that may leave you worse off in the long run. 😔 Because your baby can get used to that feeling of silicone in their mouth and then not want to latch to the bare breast. 😱

And here’s the kicker: the way Munchkin is marketing this, they want you to think it’s your magic ticket to breastfeeding bliss. ✨ But I’m here to tell you that, as a clinician, I just don’t think it’s hitting the mark. This one’s a miss, folks. Big time. 🚫

So, if you’re feeling pressure from the buzz, I’m here to remind you that you’re the boss of your breastfeeding journey 👑, and you can make informed choices that are right for you. Don’t buy into the hype.

Y’all are doing great, and I’ve got your back. 🤗
