Munchkin "Flow Shield" Marketing to Vulnerable Moms š
ā
So you may have seen some ads circulating about this "innovative product" from Munchkin, which claims to be designed to "boost your breastfeeding confidence." š Iāve got some thoughts on the latest āgame-changingā product from Munchkināthe āFlow Shield.ā Spoiler alert: itās not the miracle product theyāre making it out to be, and Iām here to break it down for you! š„
ā
So, hereās the deal: Munchkin is out here telling moms that 93% of breastfeeding moms rely on the Flow Shield. Sounds impressive, right? Well, hereās the catch: that statistic is based on a study Munchkin funded, which, shocker, is not publicly available. So yeah, weāre just supposed to trust their numbers with literally no more information than these claims they plastered up on their website? How reassuring. š¬ The big question here is: 93% of what moms? The ones who used the tool that Munchkin handed them? Color me skeptical. š¤Ø
ā
Now, the whole idea behind this thing is to āboost your confidenceā by showing you milk in the shield channel. š¼ But letās be real: just because you see milk doesnāt mean the baby is actually getting it. You might be looking at milk in the channel, but how much of that milk is actually making it into your babyās tummy? Spoiler: we donāt know. š
ā
Hereās the thing thoughāif you want to know if your baby is getting enough milk, look at the real markers of milk intake: diapers, weight gain, and a baby whoās growing and thriving. šš©š¶ Thatās the real proof in the pudding, folks. Are they soaking through a reasonable number of wet diapers and having plenty of poops? š¦ Are they gaining weight steadily? š Is your baby showing signs of satisfaction after feeds? š Are you hearing those sweet swallows at the breast? š
ā
Thatās your real checklist. Letās keep it realāthis whole shield isnāt solving the problem; itās just putting a shiny bandaid on it. š
ā
And letās not forget about the cleaning routine. The suggested cleaning process is several steps and, letās be honest, most of us will āforgetā to do it at 3 a.m. after a sleepless night. š Plus, weāve got these tiny little channels where bacteria could happily set up camp š¦ , and thatās just a recipe for mold or other yucky stuff. š¤¢
ā
Now, Iām all for nipple shields when indicated (I used them myself), but letās be clear: theyāre not the same as breastfeeding directly from the breast. Babies can kind of cheat the system with a shallow latch when using a shield. š© So while you might think this is going to solve your problems, it could actually be creating new ones. A nipple shield isnāt fixing the root causeāitās just masking the issue. And itās doing it in a way that may leave you worse off in the long run. š Because your baby can get used to that feeling of silicone in their mouth and then not want to latch to the bare breast. š±
ā
And hereās the kicker: the way Munchkin is marketing this, they want you to think itās your magic ticket to breastfeeding bliss. ⨠But Iām here to tell you that, as a clinician, I just donāt think itās hitting the mark. This oneās a miss, folks. Big time. š«
ā
So, if youāre feeling pressure from the buzz, Iām here to remind you that youāre the boss of your breastfeeding journey š, and you can make informed choices that are right for you. Donāt buy into the hype.
ā
Yāall are doing great, and Iāve got your back. š¤
